Psoriasis Diet

It might be that your doctor or dermatologist has told you that diet will play no part in healing or harming your psoriasis. I am here to tell you exactly the opposite. Think about it on a purely logical level - it simply does not make sense that diet would play no role in your skin health. These days diet is acknowledged as massively contributing to cancer and heart disease, surely it stands to reason therefore that what we eat will impact skin disease in much the same way. The skin is our largest organ of detoxification, it's responsible for cleansing the body by eliminating toxins through our pores. When the body is overburdened through stress, poor diet and harmful chemicals the results can often include an out of kilter immune system and lesions on the skin as our organs try desperately hard to sort the underlying problem and redress a healthy balance. So here's the key - instead of endlessly applying topicals to treat psoriasis symptoms, let's focus on healing the underlying problem instead.

When it comes to the best diet for psoriasis there are a number of foods I recommend including and eliminating from diet. The key to healing psoriasis and skin disease through diet, is to eliminate trigger foods, reduce inflammation and incorporate lots of beneficial juices. My book features an acid / alkaline chart (you can also find one on google). Focus on lots of foods from the alkaline side of the table. The intention is to include tons of calming alkaline foods so that the body can reduce inflammation and redress it's PH balance. 


  • Meat
  • Wheat
  • Dairy
  • Refined sugar
  • Nightshades (tomato / potato / aubergine / peppers / chillies)
  • Fizzy (soda) drinks
  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes (not technically a food but ... ) 


  • Lots of healthy greens
  • Vegetables (excluding nightshades)
  • Fruit (possibly excluding oranges and strawberries)
  • Beans and pulses
  • Rice / Buckwheat / Gluten free oats
  • Water
  • Juicing
  • Turmeric 
  • Fresh herbs - coriander (cilantro) basil, parsley
  • Nuts and seeds


  • Steroids
  • Cortisone creams
  • Coal Tar
  • Products containing petrochemicals (labelled as paraffin or mineral oils)
  • Shampoos containing SLS and other chemicals
  • Skin creams containing harmful chemicals
  • Creams containing alcohol 



  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Smoking 
  • Drugs


  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Sleep
  • Rest and relaxation



Trigger foods in psoriasis vary a little for everybody and some of the foods listed above might impact your skin more than others. For example some psoriasis sufferers might struggle more to tolerate nightshades than gluten, for some sugar and alcohol might prove particularly problematic. The key with an elimination diet is to take away all potential triggers until your skin is clear of psoriasis and then begin reintroducing them slowly when you feel ready. A food journal can really help when you're doing this. 

Applying chemicals to skin can equally negatively impact psoriasis. Anything applied to the skin is absorbed directly into the bloodstream - think about the way nicotine patches work. Using chemical laden cosmetics is allowing those nasties to be absorbed directly into the body. These should be avoided and replaced with natural, topical options such as our 100% natural skin care, dead sea salts and pure coconut oil. 

Whilst following a psoriasis diet protocol, vitamins can be incredibly beneficial to support the body through healing. Our tea and tincture are recommended in my book. The blend of red clover, burdock root, chamomile, cleavers and nettle provide a wonderfully calming and cleansing blend, whilst Milk Thistle supports the liver through healing. When the liver is overburdened it turns to the skin for help in eliminating toxins. Easing the pressure on the liver is key.   

My psoriasis diet offers a holistic (whole-listic) approach to healing the body from the inside out. We're increasingly aware of the detrimental effect stress can have on our health and skin. You might have noticed your psoriasis flare during particularly stressful times. Diet can only do so much to counter stress. It's not the stress that we can control but our reaction to it. Meditation might be completely new and alien to you, but it can prove incredibly beneficial to deal with stress and anxiety. If a psoriasis diet sounds rather overwhelming to you, there are some pointers to make this process of transitioning easier on yourself;

  • You don't have to jump in all at once - gradually reduce foods that are bad and increase foods that are good
  • Choose one thing to change each week. Whether it's sticking to 2 litres of water per day or juicing for breakfast each morning. Commit to making one change per week

There is no doubt that diet can have an incredibly positive or truly detrimental impact on your psoriasis.
